„DEGREE USED TO BE IMPORTANT” / „A DIPLOMA RÉGEN FONTOS VOLT” | group exhibition
design & concept

2020 was the first period of the sudden and radical shift from live situations into the virtual realm. In-person education moved online, and for those who completed their art university studies that year, the traditional diploma exhibition never took place. Instead, it became diploma.pdf, and the ceremonial act of the diploma defense happened online. (However, it reached a large number of views on video-sharing platforms.)

The two exhibitors also graduated in the year of the cancelled diploma exhibitions, at the Intermedia Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, and in the spirit of what they learned there, they initiated the replacement of their diploma exhibition. But is it even possible to replace a diploma exhibition? And is it necessary?

The title is a quote taken out of context from a recent interview with János Sugár, referring to his own studies. The current exhibition continues and rethinks this isolated sentence: looking back from the perspective of three years, what does a diploma exhibition mean? What might be the reason that out of the eight graduates of that year, only two are present?
